Animal attendants and trainers

Animal attendants ensure that animals in their care are well looked after. This can include grooming, exercising, treating minor injuries, watching for any negative changes in animal behaviour, cleaning waste and providing food and water. They care for all kinds of animals -  injured native animals in nature reserves, abandoned pets in shelters, fish at aquariums, even exotic animals at the State's many wildlife parks and main zoo. They may also undertake administrative tasks, such as maintaining animal records or working at the reception area of a pet shelter.

Veterinarian

Veterinarians diagnose and treat sick and injured animals, including pets, farm animals, native wildlife, sporting animals and more exotic animals, such as those kept in zoos or aquariums. They examine tissue, blood, urine and other samples to assist in diagnosing the cause of disease and decide on the appropriate treatment. Treatments may include prescribing drugs, surgical procedures and nursing care. In some cases they may also have to humanely kill an animal to end pain and suffering, or to prevent the spread of disease. Veterinarians also educate animal owners and breeders on techniques to maintain or improve an animal's health and/or welfare.

Zoologist

Zoologists perform many varied tasks depending on their specialisation and the area they are working in. As part of research they could investigate the relationship between animals and their environment; growth, nutrition, reproduction etc., of an animal; or the prey and predators of an animal. They may develop programs to control pests, or to manage the population of wild animals. They will spend time preparing scientific reports and papers. They may also be involved in teaching.
