Apprenticeship and Traineeship Reengagement Incentive
Now extended to 30 June 2022!
To support WA businesses, and eligible employers of apprentices and trainees, the Apprenticeship and Traineeship Reengagement Incentive (ATRI) is now available and has been extended through to 30 June 2022. Available for employers that employ an apprentice or trainee who was displaced between 1 March 2020 and 30 June 2022, and is listed on the Out of Contract Register, ATRI will assist you to employ an apprentice or trainee and help WA maintain the pipeline of skilled workers needed for our economic growth.
- You'll receive a one-off payment of $6,000 for an apprentice, and $3,000 for a trainee.
- You'll get an apprentice or trainee who already has skills and knowledge, and is job ready.
- Yes the Jobs and Skills WA Employer Incentive of up to $8,500 still applies!
- Yes all WA State Government COVID-19 financial support measures for businesses still apply!

Our Out of Contract Register lists apprentices and trainees who have been displaced due to COVID-19. They are all skilled and experienced, with some in their 2nd or 3rd year, and ready to start work.

Out of contract register for apprentices and trainees
To assist apprentices and trainees who have recently had their training contract terminated or cancelled, a free Out of Contract Register has been established. The register lists out of contract apprentices and trainees in Western Australia, and is updated as we confirm the agreement of all parties for their details to be displayed.
The register does not disclose personal information — just details about the industry area the apprenticeship or traineeship is in, what stage the training contract is in (eg; second year), and the apprentice or trainee's location (eg; Perth metropolitan or regional area). The register is also provided to the WA Jobs and Skills Centres, Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) providers and group training organisations (GTOs) who work with employers and can help to connect them with apprentices and trainees looking for employment.
Employers (including GTOs) who engage an apprentice or trainee from the register may be eligible to receive the Apprenticeship and Traineeship Reengagement Incentive — eligibility requirements can be found here.
How do apprentices or trainees get on to the register?
When Apprenticeship Office receives notification that a training contract has been terminated, they will contact the apprentice or trainee to ask if they would like to be added to the Out of Contract Register.
What do I do when I find a match?
When you find an apprentice or trainee on the register that matches your needs, contact Apprenticeship Office on 13 19 54. If the apprentice or trainee has given permission to share their contact details, you will be given these so that you can contact them directly to discuss your employment opportunity.
What should I do when contacting the apprentice/trainee?
You should ask questions about the apprentice or trainee's work experience and training, and you may also want to ask the apprentice or trainee to come in for a meeting or to attend an interview, to determine if they are a good match for your business needs.

Free training for displaced apprentices and trainees
If the training contract has been cancelled or suspended due to the impact of COVID-19, an apprentice or trainee can still continue off the job training with their TAFE college or registered training organisation with no fees — free! Eligible apprentices and trainees displaced between 1 March 2020 and 31 December 2020 are entitled to this fee relief.
Off the job training can continue for up to six months following the cancellation or suspension of the training contract while you're waiting until the situation improves and can return to work, or while the apprentice or trainee is looking for a new employer. There will be no course and resource fees for any units commenced after the training contract is suspended or cancelled. This fee-free training means the apprentice or trainee can continue building their skills and knowledge and continue the apprenticeship or traineeship when work returns, or it can help them to find new employment.

Options to continue the apprenticeship or traineeship
As an employer, the impact of COVID-19 on your business may impact the viability of your apprentice or trainee’s training contract. The Department of Training and Workforce Development Apprenticeship Office is taking a flexible approach to help businesses maintain the employment of their apprentices/trainees where possible, and can offer a range of options as alternatives to terminating the training contract.
Extend the duration of the training contract
Extending the training contract provides more time to complete the training requirements of the apprenticeship or traineeship, to make sure your apprentice or trainee can continue developing their skills.
Suspend the training contract
Suspension of a training contract is like taking a break from your apprenticeship or traineeship. Your apprentice/trainee and yourself need to agree on a period of time — for example; three months — then the training contract can resume after that period so that it can continue when conditions improve.
Vary the training contract from full time to part time
Changing the training contract from full time to part time may mean that by reducing their paid hours, you can continue to employ your apprentice or trainee during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Assign/transfer the training contract to a new employer
You can choose to transfer the apprenticeship or traineeship to a different employer, enabling them to stay in paid employment.

National apprentice and trainee reengagement register
A new national online register to reengage eligible apprentices and trainees displaced due to COVID-19 was recently announced by the Australian Government.
If you have an employment opportunity for an apprentice or trainee, you can add it to the register (it's free!) to find a person who wants to continue their apprenticeship or traineeship. Employers of any size, including group training organisations, can register their details and post a vacancy for an apprentice or trainee.
Meeting requirements for training contract compliance
The Department understands that it may be difficult currently to meet some training contract compliance requirements, due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Apprenticeship Office is taking a flexible approach to regulatory requirements at this time, to minimise the burden on employers, apprentices and trainees. Notifications or lodgements that do not meet compliance requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic period will be assessed and considered, and pursued only if warranted.

WA and Commonwealth Government financial support for employers
Wage subsidies for apprentices and trainees
The Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements (BAC) wages subsidy is a Commonwealth government incentive available to employers who engage an apprentice or trainee between 5 October 2020 and 30 September 2021. Eligible employers will receive a wage subsidy of up to 50 per cent of the gross wages paid to an apprentice or trainee, to a maximum of $7,000 per quarter, per eligible apprentice or trainee. The wage subsidy covers wages paid in the 12 month period from the date the apprentice or trainee commences or recommences their training contract.

Financial support for WA businesses

Jobs and Skills WA Employer Incentive
The Jobs and Skills WA Employer Incentive provides financial assistance of up to $8,500 to WA businesses who employ an apprentice or new entrant trainee.

Financial support for construction industry employers
A new $24.5 million support package has been established by the Construction Training Fund (CTF) and WA Government to assist the building and construction industry to maintain a skilled workforce during the COVID-19 crisis.
The package includes $10 million to provide an immediate, one-off payment of $2,000 to employers of existing apprentices and trainees currently receiving CTF grant payments. A new grants scheme worth $9.5 million will be introduced to assist employers to retain their existing apprentices, with payments beginning from 1 June 2020 (backdated from 1 April 2020). The payments will range from $250 per month to $500 per month, per apprentice or trainee, depending on the trades facing the most critical skills shortages in the industry.
Apprentices and trainees employed in the industry can claim up to $1,000 to support the costs of undertaking short courses to assist them in upskilling.
