Shearers take the sheep from the pen and hold firmly while removing the fleece all in one piece. They select combs that are appropriate for the type of sheep and wool. If necessary they may treat skin cuts on the sheep. They then return the sheep to the pens. They also maintain their cutters and combs by cleaning and sharpening them. They may also be required to shear stud animals with special combs or cutters.

Bunbury

Biosecurity officer

Biosecurity officers work at checkpoints across Western Australia to prevent unwanted pests, weeds and diseases being brought into the state. They control the movement of agricultural and horticultural produce, and examine incoming and outgoing animals, plants, food, humans and machinery. They may screen and inspect mail parcels, baggage, cargo containers and ships entering Western Australia. They identify anything that poses a biosecurity risk and these items may be confiscated or destroyed.

Agricultural consultant

Agricultural consultants provide advice to farmers and farm managers on how to improve crop or livestock production and offer solutions to problems with pests, weeds and crop or livestock disease. They develop procedures and techniques for solving agricultural problems and improving farm production in areas such as feeding programs, soil improvement and animal husbandry. They may also assist farmers in business analysis, the arrangement of sales, act as a mediator or broker, or run farms for absentee owners.

Biochemist

Biochemists investigate the chemical structure and processes of individual cells and their components, the organs and tissues in humans, animals, plants, and microorganisms. They study bodily organs and tissues through observation, dissection and microscopic examination. They also undertake detailed chemical analysis using sophisticated instruments and techniques. Biochemists may also study whole-of-organism processes such as digestion and growth. Biochemists may also prepare scientific reports based on their observations and experiments.

Marine biologist

Marine biologists perform many varied tasks depending on their area of specialisation and the area they are working in. As part of research they could estimate numbers of marine animals, study communities of marine organisms or assess the effect of introduced species. They may develop programs for monitoring pollution and provide information on marine conservation. They will spend time preparing scientific reports and papers. They may also be involved in teaching and giving advice to managers, politicians, primary producers and the public.

Multimedia specialist

Multimedia specialists create computer animation, audio, video and graphic image files for multimedia applications. These applications can include presentations, games, motion pictures, CD-ROMs, information kiosks and the web. Video editor

Video editors apply creative and technical editing skills to tell an effective story in either film or video format. They need to consider the mood, pace and climax of films, television programmes, video productions or commercials. They work with raw, unedited footage (‘dailies’ or ‘rushes’) and select scenes, trim sections and arrange them to produce the final product. They also add music, sound effects, animations and other visual effects (VFX). They consult with production team members to discuss scene selections and any re-shooting of scenes.

Biotechnologist

Biotechnologists use biological organisms to create and improve products and processes in fields such as agriculture, environmental conservation and medicine. They study the genetic, chemical and physical attributes of cells, tissues and organisms, and identify industrial uses for this knowledge. The applications of biotechnology are widespread and include developing new medicines and vaccinations, cross-breeding plants and animals to encourage beneficial characteristics, and using bacteria and enzymes in areas such as food production and waste treatment. Some biotechnologists may also work with cutting edge and potentially controversial technologies such as genetic modification and stem cell research.
