Our new Skills Recognition Apprenticeship Program provides a free skills assessment for existing workers, to get you into an apprenticeship for the construction industry.

About the programs
The new pathways to employment programs all have the following key features.
Each program includes a short course that you'll complete at a specified TAFE college or with a private training provider. The course is a skill set, which contains nationally accredited units of competency that have been selected to provide you with job ready skills and knowledge relevant to the kind of work you'd like to do.
You will undertake a work placement with an industry employer.
This will give you valuable real life hands on experience to add to what you learn in your training.
We have worked with WA's leading employers in a range of industry areas, who are looking for skilled workers.
At the end of the program, you may be offered employment, an apprenticeship or traineeship, be connected with other opportunities or go on to complete further studies.
Digital Workplace Job Ready Program
Do you need that extra boost of confidence in your digital skills? Digital literacy is required in most jobs so if you’re looking to improve your computer skills and increase your job options, this job ready program is for you!
About the Digital Workplace program
Developed in consultation with industry, the Digital Workplace Job Ready Program will get you job ready for a range of roles involving the use of business applications and the provision of quality customer service across a broad range of industries. The program is running on a full or part time basis, through a combination of training and a work placement giving you a foot in the door. Host employers may offer jobs to successful graduates.
Through the program, you can learn how to organise data and records, produce documents and use different software applications.
For those interested in further training, the program will provide pathways to traineeships or institutional-based training, including:
- Certificate II in Workplace Skills
- Certificate III in Business

Early Childhood Education and Care Job Ready Program
Ready for a fun and rewarding career working with children, and the opportunity to go into a paid traineeship? If you like the idea of contributing towards a child's early education and development in their formative years, this could be the career for you!
Western Australia's childhood education and care sector needs skilled and qualified workers to meet the high demand for quality staff. The Early Childhood Education and Care Job Ready Program combines training with hands on work experience, and can offer a pathway into a paid traineeship to become qualified.
What this program offers
The Early Childhood Education and Care Job Ready Program has two components; training at a TAFE or accredited training provider; plus an industry work placement. The program is available on either a full time (five weeks total) or part time (ten weeks total) study basis.
- The training includes four nationally accredited and recognised units that will set you up with entry level skills to work in an early learning setting. You will build knowledge of education and care programs for children. The units will give you credit towards a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.
- The work placement will be in an early learning centre, where you will be part of the team and gain valuable hands on experience working with children.
Because this industry is highly regulated, you must be qualified to work in the sector. The starting level qualification is a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.
A great way to get qualified is by doing a traineeship, which means you're employed and paid while you complete your studies — earn while you learn! Training is conducted by a TAFE or accredited training provider, but it takes place mostly on the job so you're learning through real life experience. Once the training is completed, you will receive a nationally recognised qualification.
We work closely with employers who have traineeships available, and there will be opportunities for people who successfully complete this program to commence employment in a traineeship.

In accordance with industry regulations you must be able to pass a Working With Children check in order to undertake the work placement component of the program, and to work in the early childhood education and care sector.
Some employers may also require you to be 'flu' vaccinated in accordance with WA Health requirements for this industry. You may also be asked to provide a national police clearance.
Driller's Offsider Job Ready Program
Ready for a career in mining, oil or gas, or minerals exploration, and the opportunity to go into a paid traineeship? If you like the idea of working in some of Western Australia’s most remote and beautiful regions, and don’t mind getting home dirty and tired after a big day’s work, you could be a driller’s offsider!
With WA's resources and mining sectors busier than ever, and a strong demand for skilled workers, the Driller's Offsider Job Ready Program could be your first step to a fantastic future with varied career opportunities. It's also an excellent pathway into a paid traineeship in drilling operations.
What's it like to work as a driller's offsider?
Drillers work in teams, using specialised equipment (the "rig") to drill into the ground — sometimes over one kilometre down — to take samples for minerals, metals, oil and gas and other materials that may be mined in the area. It's technical and physical work, and everyone in the team plays an important role.
As a driller's offsider, you will work closely with the driller who is the senior person on the rig and supervises the drilling operation.
You'll be responsible for tasks such as setting up, operating and maintaining the drill rig and equipment such as mud shakers, diesel tanks and lines, water lines and hoses; preparing the drill rods; collecting core samples and logging the sampling system; monitoring the drill hole for safety; adding drill rods as the depth of the drill increases; and assisting the driller.

Induction and training
Prior to starting the Driller’s Offsider Job Ready Program you will attend a one-day induction to familiarise yourself with the duties of a drillers’ offsider and the requirements to succeed in the role.
The skill set used in the two-week training course for the Driller’s Offsider Job Ready Program contains four nationally accredited and recognised units that will set you up with entry level skills to safely work onsite, and can lead to other career opportunities in drilling.
When you successfully complete the training, you'll get your first aid certificate and work safely at heights ticket; know how to apply CPR; and have hands-on experience in how to operate and maintain a four-wheel drive vehicle.
After the training you may have the opportunity for a work placement or even employment or a traineeship, where you’ll learn skills such as how to move, set-up and operate drilling rigs and equipment such as mud shakers, diesel tanks and lines, water lines and hoses to drill for mineral exploration and oil/gas exploration and production; maintain the drill rig and equipment, assist the onsite drill crew, and collect core samples.
Connecting with traineeship and job opportunities
Successful graduates of this program may be connected with an employer to commence employment or start a traineeship for the Certificate II in Drilling Operations qualification. Under a traineeship, you are employed and paid while you learn — training is conducted mostly on the job, and on completion you will receive a nationally recognised qualification. Future Chef Job Ready Program
If you have a passion for food and love the idea of working in a fun and fast-paced professional kitchen, creating beautiful and delicious dishes, the Future Chef Job Ready Program offers you training combined with work placement in a commercial kitchen, plus the opportunity to connect with apprenticeship opportunities and get cooking on your future chef career!
Skilled chefs are in high demand here in Western Australia, and all over the world — you'll have a smorgasbord of job opportunities to choose from, for years to come. Everyone is welcome to register for this program — young people, mature age persons and women are particularly encouraged to apply.
About the Future Chef program
Developed in consultation with WA's hospitality industry leaders, the Future Chef Job Ready Program runs for a total of four weeks, which is made up of a combination of training plus a work placement. You will complete five nationally recognised units at a TAFE or training provider, and gain job ready skills and knowledge including food safety, preparing and presenting simple dishes, and how to use a range of kitchen equipment.
You will also complete five days of work placement in a working commercial kitchen, where you'll get to use the skills that you're learning in the training and gain valuable hands on experience. You'll also get a taste of what the work is like, and an opportunity to meet a potential employer.

Job and apprenticeship opportunities
The goal of this program is to develop WA's future chefs — and you could be one of them! We work closely with industry employers who have job opportunities and/or are looking for apprentices, and you will have the opportunity to meet some of these employers during your work placement which may lead to the offer of a job or apprenticeship.
Once you successfully complete the program, you may be offered employment; a pre-apprenticeship; or a chef apprenticeship.
If you don’t receive an offer straight away, we will help connect you to our network of employers in restaurants, hotels, cafes or catering companies to assist with finding you employment.

What's it like to do a chef apprenticeship?
As an apprentice chef, you will work towards achieving your industry qualification through a combination of on and off the job training. You'll be employed, and get paid while you learn. Formal training takes place at a TAFE or private training provider, and is usually done as one or two days per week or as a block such as one week every couple of months. During your apprenticeship you'll learn the full range of skills and knowledge required to be a chef, plus gain valuable hands on experience and know-how.

She has now completed her apprenticeship, and is working in the City View Café at Optus Stadium.
Heavy Vehicle Driving Operations
How would you like to get your career as a heavy vehicle driver in the road transport industry trucking along? Or maybe you'd like to build on the skills you already have, to open up more job opportunities? The new Heavy Vehicle Driving Operations job ready skill set is for you, and the training is free for eligible students*!
Heavy vehicles are vital in WA, to transport food and other items across our great state and cross-country. Your training will include not only the theoretical knowledge required to work as a heavy vehicle driver, but also practical driving instruction for operation of a heavy rigid (HR); heavy combination (HC); or multi-combination (MC) vehicle.
Training + hands-on experience
This six-week program will get you job ready with skills and knowledge that employers are looking for, including:
- work health and safety procedures;
- carrying out inspections;
- how to secure, load and unload cargo;
- apply work fatigue management strategies; and
- use and maintain mechanical equipment.
Plus there's a practical driving instruction training component, which will be conducted in a range of conditions and locations and with coaching from qualified and experienced drivers.
On successful completion, you'll obtain a licence for an HR, HC or MC class vehicle and you can also apply for a forklift (LF) licence. This is subject to passing a Department of Transport licence assessment.
You will also receive credit for units in the Certificate III in Driving Operations traineeship, which you could then go on to complete with an employer and earn while you continue to learn.
Connecting you with job opportunities
This job ready program combines formal training with real, hands-on experience through practical hours of driving heavy haulage vehicles. It has been developed to get you job ready to join the transport and logistics industry, which currently has a huge demand for skilled workers.
The program also includes industry mentoring for program graduates, co-ordinated by Western Roads Federation, to help connect you with employers and get on the road.

Ageing and Disability Job Ready program
Ageing and disability are two of the fastest growing areas of healthcare in Western Australia. They both offer fantastic opportunities for a rewarding and fulfilling career, where you can make a positive difference to the lives of others and in the wider community.
This program was developed in partnership with Community Skills WA and key industry partners,to get you job ready with key skills and knowledge, including how to meet personal support needs. You will also gain real hands on industry experience through work placement with an aged care or disability support employer, as part of the program.
Once you complete the program and are job ready to join the ageing and disability workforce, you may:
- receive an offer of employment with your work placement employer;
- be offered a traineeship in aged care or disability work;
- have opportunities to use your skills to transition into an allied health occupation;
- connect with other employment opportunities and/or complete further studies to again a qualification in aged care or disability support.
Please note: This program is available only to participants 18 years of age or above. You must be fully COVID vaccinated to participate in this program; due to the work placement component.

Bricklaying Job Ready program
The Bricklaying Job Ready program has been developed in consultation with the WA Construction Training Fund and key industry partners, to create skilled and job ready workers for WA’s building and construction industry. Through this program, you will complete the Work Safety in Construction short course skill set — which teaches work safety practices, how to use a range of construction equipment and tools including levelling devices, and skills to work in a construction team. You'll learn about basic bricklaying for new and existing structures including residential homes, units and apartments.
The program offers a combination of training at a TAFE college or registered training organisation, and four days of work placement with an industry employer on a building and construction worksite. When you successfully complete the program, you may be offered a bricklaying apprenticeship.
Please note: To participate in this program, it is desirable to hold a valid driver's licence.

Infrastructure Ready program
Designed with WA's leading civil construction employers, the Infrastructure Ready program will get you job ready to work on a range of civil construction projects. With the investment in infrastructure projects over the next four years, the jobs are waiting for you! Many large projects are underway across Perth and regional areas; including METRONET and road projects and building, upgrading and maintaining schools and community facilities, and this program will get you job ready to be part of this exciting work.
Through this program, you'll complete the Infrastructure Ready skill set — with a combination of training at a TAFE college or registered training organisation, and four days of work placement with an industry employer where you'll gain hands on work experience. You'll learn about working safely on construction sites, carrying out measurements and calculations, preparing and organising construction work, and operating small plant and equipment used in construction projects. The program also focuses on safe work practices, and includes your white card. When you successfully complete the program, you may be offered employment.
Everyone is welcome to register for this program, and priority diversity groups, including youth (18—24 years old). Mature age persons (45+ years old) and females are particularly encouraged.
Please note: To participate in this program, it is desirable to hold a valid driver's licence and be over 18 years of age.

Skills Recognition Apprenticeship Program
Do you have skills, experience and knowledge from working in the construction industry, but no formal qualification? How would you like to get a nationally recognised trades qualification, through an apprenticeship?
The Skills Recognition Apprenticeship Program (SRAP) offers you the opportunity to have your construction industry skills, knowledge and experience assessed and counted towards a trades qualification, to boost your job and career prospects.
Best of all, the SRAP assessment is 100% free for eligible applicants — that's right, no cost to you! The program aims to help you boost your employability through the attainment of a trades qualification, and to support employers across Western Australia's construction industry who need skilled workers.
Who is eligible for SRAP?
SRAP is open to anyone currently working in the construction industry who has construction industry skills, knowledge and experience — there are no age limits, but you must be a permanent resident of WA. It is available through TAFE colleges in both metropolitan and regional WA for non-licensed construction trades including carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating, bricklaying, tile laying, plastering, concreting, ceiling and wall fixing, stonemasonry, sprinkler fitting and signwriting.
How does SRAP work?
The first step is to apply through our online expression of interest form, so that you can tell us about yourself and your experience. If your application is successful we will contact you to discuss next steps.
If you are already employed in the construction industry, the first stage of SRAP is the assessment. This is conducted in accordance with national industry standards, and looks at your skills and experience to see where you already demonstrate competency to the standard required by the trades qualification.
Will SRAP help me find a job or boost my career prospects?
Yes! Having a nationally recognised trades qualification greatly improves your employability and opens up new opportunities for you across the construction industry. Employers who take you on as an apprentice through SRAP not only get a trades qualified worker in less time, but will also be eligible for a range of financial incentives which makes you an attractive employment prospect!

FEE FREE training extended into 2024 – no course fees!
All Job Ready short course skill sets will continue to be fully fee-free, and selected full qualifications will remain 100% course fee-free through 2024! That's over 130 free training courses!
Lower fees, local skills — Course fees slashed!
We have slashed the course fees on selected qualifications by half — some by as much as 72 per cent — through the Lower fees, local skills program! From entry level pre-apprenticeships and pre-traineeships, through to Certificates II, III, IV and even Diploma level qualifications — including apprenticeships and traineeships — there's sure to be something that matches your career goals.
Eligibility for free training
Please read the following information regarding eligibility for free training in the Job Ready Pathways programs.
The WA State Government, through Jobs and Skills WA, subsidises vocational education and training (VET) courses in priority areas, to reduce or remove the fees and make training more accessible to all Western Australians.
From 1 January 2023, the following eligibility criteria apply for free training
To be eligible for free training, you must have left school*, have your primary place of residence in Western Australia, and are either:
- an Australian citizen; or
- a permanent visa holder or holder of visa subclass 309, 444, 449, 785, 786, 790, or 820; or
- a dependent or spouse of the primary holder of a visa subclass 457 or 482**; or
- a bridging visa holder who has made a valid application for a visa subclass 866; or
- a bridging visa E holder (subclasses 050 and 051) who has made a valid application for a visa subclass 785 or 790.
*In 2023, Year 12 school students who are leaving school can access a subsidised training place from 23 October 2023.
**From 1 January 2023, the spouses and dependants of primary 457 or 482 visa holders will be also able to access free training in WA. These skilled migrant families will be further supported by waiving public school fees for their children during 2023.
The following eligibility criteria are in place up to 31 December 2022 for free training
Through to 31 December 2022, the Job Ready Pathway Programs are fee-free to the following concession-eligible residents of Western Australia.
- Persons aged 15—24 years at the time of enrolment (excluding students enrolled at school*)
- Persons and dependents of persons in receipt of services from Commonwealth support or employment services programs Workforce Australia, or ParentsNext
- Persons and dependents of persons receiving the Youth Allowance, AUSTUDY or ABSTUDY
- Persons and dependents of persons holding a pensioner concession card or Health Care Card; or a Repatriation Health Benefits Card issued by the Department of Veterans' Affairs
- Dependents of persons who are inmates of a custodial institution
*In 2022, Year 12 school students who are leaving school can access a subsidised training place from 24 October 2022.
