COVID-19 update: Perth and Peel lockdown lifted
The WA Government has announced that the current lockdown in the Perth and Peel regions is ending at 12:01 am Saturday 3 July 2021, with a range of interim restrictions in place for three days until 12:01 am on Tuesday 6 July, and some further transitional restrictions to remain in place until 12:01 am on Monday 12 July pending ongoing health advice.

The new Peel Jobs and Skills Centre was officially launched today at the Mandurah campus of South Metropolitan TAFE. They also support local employers and businesses to build a skilled workforce and create employment, apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities, and offer a free online jobs board where job vacancies can be posted.

Up to $126 million is now available to create thousands of jobs for apprenticeships and traineeships. Funding will also be provided for thousands of pre-apprenticeships – a career pathway that is strongly supported by industry – and for skills development to support the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

The expo showcased a wide range of career opportunities and training options, with some organisations actively recruiting. Minister for Education and Training Sue Ellery visited on Friday and enjoyed visiting many of the booths and was interviewed by BOOM Radio.
WA Training Awards 2018 finalists announced!
The 29 outstanding individual finalists in this year's WA Training Awards have been announced today.
The WA Training Awards put the training sector in the spotlight by highlighting the achievements of apprentices, trainees, VET students, training organisations and employers. The awards help highlight the opportunities the VET sector provides people to upskill or retrain, ensuring they can adapt to a changing economy, workplaces and jobs.

The Rockingham Jobs and Skills Centre will support the local community through providing information, resources and support about training and career options, and also support local employers and businesses to build a skilled workforce and create employment, apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities.
Aboriginal interpreting service AIWA now available for Western Australia
Since 2000, when it first began operating in Kununurra as Kimberley Interpreting Service (KIS), AIWA has been committed to bringing two-way understanding to interactions between WA Aboriginal language speakers and those responsible for delivering services across all fields of government and community services.
Now available across all regions of Western Australia, AIWA can provide translation and interpreting services in over 40 Aboriginal languages.
Creating opportunities in regional communities: TAFE and school working together
Yandeyarra Community is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia – 142kms south-east from Port Hedland. Situated on the bank of the Yule River, the community is on a Native Reserve. Yandeyarra Remote Community School has a 100% Aboriginal student population, from kindergarten to Year 12; approximately 40 students.
The school has been working with North Regional TAFE over the past nine years, to offer customised vocational education and training (VET) for its students and people in the community. Recently the TAFE has delivered a Certificate 2 in Rural Operations program to provide students with hands-on skills and experience that could help them find employment in a range of areas such as farming, agriculture, conservation and land management.
Jobs and Skills Centres welcome Aboriginal artist Biara Martin for NAIDOC week
To celebrate NAIDOC week, local Aboriginal artist Biara Martin was in residence at two of the South Metropolitan TAFE Jobs and Skills Centres to re-create their Aboriginal Seasons artwork.
The original artwork was created by Nate Stuart from Rockingham Jobs and Skills Centre, and each of the designs tie in with local Noongar language and culture. It features on signage at each centre, as a 'Wanju' (welcome) to all visitors.
NAIDOC Week 2018 – Celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and communities
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
Deadly Jobs Expo 2018 - Career opportunities for Aboriginal people at NAIDOC Family Day
More than 45 employers will take part in the 2018 Deadly Jobs Expo, to share job opportunities for Aboriginal people in metropolitan, regional or FIFO roles across Western Australia.
Minimum wage rates to raise from 1 July, including for apprentices and trainees!
On 13 June, the WA Industrial Relations Commission increased the state minimum wage for adult award free employees and all pay rates in WA awards effective from the first pay period on or after 1 July 2018.
WA young guns shine at 2018 WorldSkills National Championships
An outstanding achievement by Team WA wins 21 medals! The WorldSkills National Championships is the country’s largest Vocational Education and Training (VET) competition. It highlights the country’s best apprentices and trainees in more than 60 different skills areas, who compete for the title of national champion. More than a third of the 51 Team WA participants were secondary school students who competed in the WorldSkills Australia Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) program.
Jobs and Skills Centres officially launched
The first five Jobs and Skills Centres were officially launched on 30 May 2018, creating increased access to job-related services for Western Australians. The centres are a one-stop-shop for students, jobseekers and career changers looking to improve their skills and job prospects. Staff at the centres will provide free professional and practical advice on training and employment opportunities, career advice, and apprenticeship and training information.

TAFE college named training partner for naval shipbuilding college
South Metropolitan TAFE (SMT) will be the major training provider in Western Australia for new defence contracts as part of the national Australian Naval Shipbuilding College announced today by the Federal Government, for trade and semi-professional training in WA for the naval shipbuilding industry.

The commitment of Wirrpanda Foundation mentor Kylie Jesus to a driver training program has seen huge returns for young Aboriginal people, with almost 90 people obtaining their provisional licence and more than 50 gaining employment as a direct result of the program. Kylie is a driver training mentor for the Kwinana Driver Training Program which was funded by the Department of Training and Workforce Development through the Wirrpanda Foundation.
