The Integrating Mental Health Practice Skill Set will equip workers in the community services sector with the skills to assist clients who are experiencing mental health concerns, and respond to the increasing need for mental health awareness.

The community mental health sector values employees with strong soft skills and the capacity to provide person-centred, recovery-focussed care. The skill set provides people who are interested in working in the sector the opportunity to determine if it is the right fit for them, and understand and develop foundational skills for entry into the sector.

What is a skill set?

In vocational education and training (VET), a skill set is a short course that's developed by choosing individual units of competency from a full qualification (or qualifications) that target a specific set of skills and knowledge, to meet the needs of industry or a particular job role. 

The units of competency in a skill set are nationally accredited and recognised. 

This means that when you successfully complete a skill set, you will receive a Statement of Attainment as an official record. This verifies that you have completed those units, so that you can receive credit for them should you continue on to further study.


Skill sets are also used to upskill workers for specific skills and knowledge required for their job; or in situations where a full qualification is not required.

The Integrating Mental Health Practice Skill Set will give you the skills to assist and support clients who are experiencing mental health concerns, and respond to the increasing need for mental health awareness. This training is ideal for people currently working withor experienced in — a person-centred care model within the community services, healthcare or people services sectors who would like to integrate mental health support skills and knowledge into their work practice; or considering a move into a mental health specialisation role.

You'll gain skills in providing support services to people with mental health issues, including those at risk of suicide or with alcohol and other drug issues; recognising and responding to crisis situations; managing personal stress in the workplace; and working with diverse people.

*Please note, it is highly recommended that you should be working in or have experience in the field.

Are you passionate about people? This Skill Set provides you the skills to assist and support people who are experiencing mental health concerns, and respond to the increasing need for mental health awareness. You will also gain practical experience to integrate mental health support skills into your work practice. This program consists of five units and can be delivered over a three month period. Further study pathways available to learners who undertake this qualification include progression to the CHC43315, Certificate IV in Mental Health. Activ Pathways offer flexible delivery options throughout WA – including metro and regional locations Government funded places for this qualification may be available under the Priority Industry Training and Traineeship funding models, subject to eligibility.
