Under the guidance of our seasoned lecturers, who are industry experts themselves, you'll acquire the skills to plan and execute programs and effectively manage project budgets. You'll also cover recommending plants, establishing plants, and designing captivating plant displays, allowing your unique creative talent to shine.

Our facilities encompass expansive garden spaces for hands-on design practice, computer labs equipped with modern software, and specialized nursery areas. You'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a practical learning environment that mirrors current industry standards, providing a workplace experience.

On successful completion you'll be well-prepared for roles such as Horticulture Team Leader, Senior Horticulturist , Horticultural Leading Hand or Supervisor . The employment prospects are extensive, with opportunities spanning local and state government, nursery, natural area management, gardening, and the landscape industry, opening up a world of possibilities for your horticultural career.

As part of this course you will undertake three units that have been designed to meet the Department of Health requirements to gain a Pest Management Technician Licence to control weeds and other minor pests in lawns and gardens, landscaping, bushland or minesite rehabilitation.

Be guided by our expert lecturers who are industry professionals as you learn to plan and facilitate programs and cost out a project to work within a budget. You'll develop your skills in identifying plant specimens, soil health, recommending plants, performing specialist amenity pruning, plant establishment and designing plant displays, bringing your own creative flair. In addition, this course will provide you with skills in supervising projects and operations, as well as team routines and performance. 

You'll also be able to choose specialist units that will help you strengthen your technical skills and focus on key areas you wish to pursue.

Our dedicated Murdoch Student Garden Centre(opens in a new tab) is pivotal to the learning experience for students and teaches excellence in service delivery. Facilities include extensive garden spaces for design practice, computer labs with contemporary software and dedicated sheltered nursery areas. Students can learn through application of hands-on skills in an environment that reflects current industry practices and simulates a real-life workplace experience.  

As part of their Murdoch campus studies, students propagate natives, herbs and some exotic plants suitable to WA's climate. These plants are then prepared at the on-campus nursery and greenhouse for retail sales at the Student Garden Centre Plant Sale which is open to the general public for a short time each May and November, giving students the ability to satisfy the retail skill building requirements of their horticulture course.

This qualification allows individuals to develop post-trade skills and knowledge across a broad coverage of the industry prior to undertaking higher level roles in the industry.

South Regional TAFE is transitioning this qualification to the new training package in 2024. Students will be enrolled into the new units developed to meet current and future industry needs. Fees may vary for courses transitioning to the new training package.
