  • Provide leadership and guidance to clients and other staff
  • Deal with unpredictable situations applying defined guidelines and procedures from the fitness industry and relevant organisation
  • Monitor and manage business activities in order to operate efficiently and profitably

This qualification provides a pathway to work in a diversity of fitness industry businesses including fitness centres, gyms, aquatic facilities, community facilities and in open spaces.

The Certificate IV in Fitness gives you the skills and knowledge you need to become a qualified personal trainer (PT) or group personal trainer.

This rewarding career provides job versatility, and you can work as a trainer both indoors and outdoors in gyms, council run leisure and community centres, client workplaces and homes, or online. You can be employed by a gym or be self-employed owning your studio or providing one-on-one or group training, even doing personal training as a second job and setting your own hours.

In this advanced fitness course you will learn how to run your own business and manage client relationships, and how to develop and deliver personalised exercise programs for a range of groups from teens to seniors, athletes and people with disabilities. You will be able to apply the skills of functional anatomy and strength and conditioning techniques to your training programs.

Our courses are widely respected in the fitness industry and you can build your technique in our new functional training centre at Murdoch and be trained by our expert lecturers with strong industry connections.

Study in specialist facilities

Industry trends are changing and advancing, and to ensure our training facilities are cutting-edge, in November 2022 we opened a brand-new functional training centre for Certificate IV in Fitness students. The centre includes a multi-rig with 8 cells, barbells, weight plates, rowers, spin bikes, kettlebells, deadballs, dumbbells, plyometric boxes and benches to teach the technique of exercises such as squats, pull-ups, benchpress, deadlifts, shoulder press and more.

Students also learn in a dedicated outdoor personal training centre space to develop skills in teens’ personal training, childrens’ programs and outdoor personal training.

This qualification reflects the role of personal trainers who develop, instruct and evaluate personalised exercise programs for generally healthy and low risk clients, to achieve specific fitness goals.

Personal trainers work independently using highly developed fitness skills and knowledge in both routine and unpredictable situations. They use well-developed communication and collaboration skills to interact with clients and health professionals to improve client fitness outcomes.

This course provides a pathway to work as an employed or self-employed personal trainer in settings such as fitness facilities, gyms, leisure and community centres, client workplaces and homes and outdoor locations. Personal trainers may offer services to individuals and groups and may provide online training services.

During this course you will learn how to create and deliver personalised exercise programs to a wide variety of clients, apply exercise science knowledge and learn advance strength and conditioning exercises. Additionally, you will learn how to investigate business opportunities and develop a business plan to help ensure you get the most out of your personal training business.

South Regional TAFE provides a fully equipped training gymnasium with all of the required equipment and resources. The gymnasium includes a multi-rig with two cells, barbells, weight plates, rowers, exercise bikes, kettlebells, slam balls, dumbbells, plyometric boxes and benches to teach the technique of exercises such as squats, pull-ups, bench press, deadlifts, shoulder press and more.
