If you're a mechanic (or an experienced auto worker) who would like to boost your employment or career prospects, or gain some advanced skills to move into a more specialised area, this is the course for you! This nationally recognised and accredited qualification will give you advanced skills and knowledge in light vehicle diagnostics.

You'll gain a thorough understanding of how to diagnose faults and mechanical issues in a range of systems including braking, safety, steering, suspension, engine management, electrical, driveline, fuel (including LPG), and integrated stability control.

The delivery of this qualification will consist of 10 units of competency for award of this qualification including: 1 core unit and 9 elective units, consisting of:

  • up to 9 units that may be chosen from the elective units listed on https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/AUR40216
  • up to 2 units may be chosen from a Certificate III qualification or above in this Training Package or another endorsed Training Package or accredited course, provided that the units chosen to contribute to the vocational outcome of this qualification and do not duplicate the outcome of another unit chosen for the qualification. 

Those undertaking the Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis must have completed an automotive mechanical Certificate III qualification or be able to demonstrate equivalent competency.

  • Minimum age of 18 years and above
  • Satisfactory completion of the equivalent of Australian Year 11 or higher
  • Have physical attributes suitable for working in the automotive industry that encompasses manual handling of equipment including lifting and carrying heavy objects within scope of safe working practices (i.e. removing and fitting engine electrical components and parts).

Additionally, the learner is required to:

  • Complete the Pre-Training Review which aims to identify training needs through questions on previous education or training, relevance of the courses to learner and relevant experience.
  • Complete the Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Test.
