If you would like to set sail with a career in the maritime industry, as chief engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 750 kW; second engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 1,500 kW in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ); second engineer on vessels with inboard engines with propulsion power up to 1500 kilowatts within the EEZ; chief or second engineer on a vessel with outboard engines within the EEZ; an assistant under the direct supervision of the chief engineer; or in the engine room of a vessel up to 80 meters long with propulsion power up to 3,000 kilowatts.

You'll learn how to apply safety procedures including survival skills at sea; extinguish fires; refuel vessels adhering to marine pollution (MARPOL) guidelines; perform basic engineering calculations; operate and maintain deck machinery, auxiliary power systems, and extra-low and low voltage electrical systems and equipment; and more!

This qualification is suitable for people who work as Marine Engineers in the maritime industry, as Chief Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 750 kW and Second Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 1500 kW in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Students will develop the following skills:

  • Taking charge of an engine room with the main propulsion of less than 750kW
  • Applying safety procedures
  • Applying survival skills at sea
  • Extinguishing fires
  • Refuelling vessels adhering to marine pollution (MARPOL) guidelines
  • Performing basic engineering calculations
  • Operating and maintaining deck machinery
  • Operating and maintaining auxiliary power systems, and

    The Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal) will allow you to work as:

    • Chief engineer on vessels with inboard engines with propulsion power up to 750 kilowatts within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
    • Chief or second engineer on a vessel with outboard engines with unlimited propulsion power within the EEZ.
    • Second engineer on vessels with inboard engines with propulsion power up to 1500 kilowatts within the EEZ.
    • An assistant under the general supervision of the chief engineer.
    • In the engine room of a vessel with propulsion power up to 3000 kilowatts within the EEZ.

    This certificate will allow you to work as:

    • chief engineer on vessels with inboard engines with propulsion power up to 750 kilowatts within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
    • second engineer on vessels with inboard engines with propulsion power up to 1500 kilowatts within the EEZ.
    • chief or second engineer on a vessel with outboard engines within the EEZ.
