Pre-apprenticeships and pre-traineeships

Looking to get a head start on launching your career?
Consider a pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship!

If you're thinking about a future in a traditional trades area, or in the health and community services sector, pre-apprenticeships and pre-traineeships offer a combination of nationally accredited and recognised training plus hands on workplace experience.

You'll gain a solid base of skills and knowledge plus industry experience to fast track your career, and  a head start if you choose to continue on to do an apprenticeship or traineeship.

Whether you're starting new, rejoining the workforce or switching careers, a pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship will help you feel confident you've got the skills, knowledge and experience employers want.

Launch your career: Pre-apprenticeships and pre-traineeships

Launch your career!

One of the best things about pre-apprenticeships and pre-traineeships is the work placement component, where you'll spend time completing work-related tasks and activities in a workplace context. You'll be supported and mentored by qualified staff, and experience the day to day duties for the occupation that you're interested in. This gives you a strong advantage when it comes to applying for an apprenticeship, a traineeship or a job.

Employers who provide work placement opportunities are often actively looking for suitable candidates for their business, and during your work placement you'll be able to show that you have not only the skills and knowledge for the job but also the positive attitude and personality they're looking for — which means you may be offered an apprenticeship or traineeship, or employment.

At the end of your pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship, you will feel more confident applying for an apprenticeship or traineeship, or a job, because you'll have a great base of skills and knowledge that employers are looking for. Your pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship qualification really can launch your career!

Reduced course fees and annual fees cap

Right now a number of pre-apprenticeships and pre-traineeships across a range of industry areas have their course fees reduced by half or more, as part of our Lower fees, local skills program.

On top of that; an annual fees cap applies for course fees on all of the Lower fees, local skills qualifications — this means that no matter how much your course fees actually are, you will not pay more than a set total amount for course fees per qualification or course per year.  The annual course fees cap is set at $400 for eligible students including people aged 15—24, jobseekers and concession card holders; and $1,200 for non-concession students.

There's never been a better time to launch your new career!

Note: If you are a secondary school student undertaking a pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship while enrolled at school, you do not pay any course fees.

    About pre-apprenticeships and pre-traineeships

Pre-apprenticeships and pre-traineeships are courses designed to give you job ready skills and knowledge, and a 'taster' of working in a particular industry or job role. They can also help you to articulate into a related apprenticeship or traineeship.

    • Pre-apprenticeships are aligned to traditional trade occupations in a range of industries including building and construction; electrical; automotive; fabrication and welding; and manufacturing.
    • Pre-traineeships are aligned to non-trade occupations in the community services and health sectors; for work in areas such as aged care support; disability support; and community health and wellbeing.

Pre-apprenticeships and pre-traineeships both involve study at a TAFE college or training provider and work placement, where you'll gain hands on skills and experience. They can run for between three months to two years, on either a full or part time study basis.

The training component of your pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship is based on nationally accredited vocational education and training (VET) units of competency, and on successful completion you will receive a nationally recognised qualification.

If you are offered an apprenticeship or traineeship, or you decide to continue building your skills and knowledge through a higher level qualification after your pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship, you receive credit for the units you have already completed which means you can complete the apprenticeship / traineeship or that higher level qualification more quickly.
