Do you want to learn to coordinate and manage the development and delivery of services and programs designed to address the social, behavioural, health, welfare, developmental and protection needs of young people?
This course reflects the role of people with responsibility for the development and the outcomes of programs and services for young people managed through a range of agencies and designed to meet the social, behavioural, health, welfare, developmental and protection needs of young people. This work may be undertaken through employment in community, government and welfare agencies. You will learn skills that enable you to respond to young people in crisis and the ability to respond to critical situations. You will learn about consultation, training techniques, program planning, legal and cultural issues, community action, research and policy development. You will also learn skills in the management of finances, work safety and the work environment. As part of this qualification you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned?

We recommend thatyou areover the age of 18 before enrolling in this course as the supervised work placement (course component) and employment outcomes are very limited for students under the age of 18.
You willneed to have the ability to undertake research and apply yourself to self directed activities.

You will learn skills that enable you to respond to young people in crisis and the ability to respond to critical situations and gain skills about consultation, training techniques, program planning, legal and cultural issues, community action, research and policy development.

The management of finances, work safety and the work environment are also covered in this qualification. As part of this qualification you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned. Please note eligibility for supervised work placement is subject to obtaining a satisfactory Police Clearance. You will also need a Working with Children Check if your placement involves contact with children. Additional costs will include $65 National Police Clearance, through Australia Post (it is best to apply for this first) and $11 Working With Children Check (WWCC).

Please note you will need to be enrolled in the appropriate units to be offered a work placement - it is not a standard for all enrolments.

Your Diploma of Youth Work prepares you for roles such as:

  • Youth Worker
  • Juvenile Justice Worker
  • Case Manager
  • Residential Support Worker
  • Community Education Worker

With part time study you will be completing your course on-campus with face to face contact with your lecturers and fellow students during every-day class activities.

Qualifications are broken down into stages to try and suit your availability.
If you are planning on completing a Certificate III or IV level course we will recommend that the course be broken into 2 or 3 stages over 12 - 18 months
If you are planning on completing a Diploma level course we will recommend that the course be broken into 3 or 4 stages over 18 - 24 months

A Work Placement is compulsory for students undertaking a Certificate IV or Diploma as some units in these qualifications require you to demonstrate your skills in a work place setting. These units will be highlighted on your study plan.

Workplace training offers a flexible, self-paced study program which combines workplace recognition of prior learning and individualised ‘gap’ training to attain your qualification.

Workplace training means every time you go to work you are learning and demonstrating competence whilst working towards your qualification. The flexibility of workplace training allows you to structure and perform learning and assessment in a way that fits into your professional and personal life.

Learning and assessment plans are created on an individual level in consultation with you and/or your employer. Workplace training assessment is conducted using numerous methods including practical demonstration and observation, question and answer interviews, written tasks, supervisor reports and workshops.
