Do you have a passion for animals? Would you like to work with our furry and feathered friends?

This course provides a broad introduction to working with a range of animals in a variety of animal care workplaces with no previous experience necessary. This course will kick-start your amazing career with animals.

You will gain skills and knowledge in:

  • Learning fundamental animal care and handling methods
  • Developing team-work, communication and problem-solving skills
  • Catering for animal nutritional needs
  • Providing basic first aid to animals
  • Assisting with animal health care
  • Developing self-management and organisational techniques
  • Working with teams of people who are willing to help make a difference to the lives of our animal companions
  • Handling animals safely and confidently in a range of situations
  • Dealing with emergencies
  • Observing, monitoring and recognising health issues in animals, and
  • Being able to assist in treating diseases and illness.
Important Information
This course involves some physical work and students must be prepared to work outdoors and deal with dirty, smelly situations.
  • Personal requirements are:
  • Being passionate about animals and their welfare
  • Good communication skills and enjoy working with people
  • Able to work well in a team, enjoying practical and manual activities
  • Confidence and patience when working with animals
  • Able to undertake manual and sometimes heavy work, and
  • Being observant and methodical.
Pathways :This course is a pathway to Certificate III in Companion Animal Services and Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing.
VET for Schools : This course is available in our VET for Schools programs. Students will learn about caring for all types of animals by catering for animal nutritional needs, basic animal care and handling as well as first aid. An opportunity to practice your skills will be provided through our TAFE Animal surgery as well as via an Industry placement. Check out our VETiS Guide for more information.
VET Student Loans : This course is NOT eligible for a VET Student Loan.

South Metropolitan TAFE

This course is for people wanting to gain experience in working with animals. It is an entry point into the animal care industry and prepares you for job roles such as an animal attendant in a kennel, cattery, animal shelter or pet shop.

The course enables you to develop skills and knowledge required for the care and maintenance of animals in a variety of workplaces. You will learn about the animal care industry and careers available in its many sectors. South Metropolitan TAFE will provide you with access to practical experience with animals throughout the course, with the help of our industry partners. These include animal shelters and pounds, as well as various kennels, catteries and pet shops.

During the course you will be required to complete work placement. You are encouraged to secure this yourself, though there will be assistance available from your lecturers and their industry contacts.

This Qualification is also available as a Traineeship. To study as a Trainee, you must be employed in a training contract by an appropriate organisation. Please see the Apprenticeships/Traineeships section for more information.
