Qualification Description

The Certificate IV in School Age Education and Care introduces students to the role of working in the field of school age care. It is one of the minimum qualifications for gaining employment in an ACECQA approved school age care service and often the first qualification for those wanting to move to higher qualifications in school age care in the future.

Employment Areas

This qualification supports employment in the following roles: 

  • Assistant Educator in before and after school care programs
  • Assistant Educator in vacation care or school holiday programs
  • Support roles in leisure/youth programs including recreation Assistant
  • Other education-based employers may accept this qualification, such as tutors, support workers or teacher aides.

This is the qualification required of workers who wish to be employed as the responsible officer in out of school-hours child care settings. It also provides workers with the skills and knowledge useful in supporting the implementation of learning and development programs, and supporting children’s wellbeing in 5 – 12 years olds. Successful completion of this qualification will provide a strong foundation for progressing to the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.

This qualification can be completed as a traineeship in the workplace (if you are currently employed in the industry) or in a face to face classroom setting with small classes and experienced trainers who are able to cater for the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.

All participants must complete 150 hours of work placement which the Academy coordinates on their behalf.

The Western Australian Government has identified the Child Care Industry as a skills shortage area.
