Great news for tourism jobs and careers in WA.
In positive news for tourism in Western Australia the industry has achieved the highest number of jobs on record since the statistic was first recorded 12 years ago, according to a new Tourism Research Australia report recently released.
The new State Tourism Satellite Account 2017-18 details the economic impacts of tourism for each state and territory across Australia. It reports that in 2017—18, a total of 108,800 people were employed in the WA tourism industry — almost 2,000 more jobs compared to the previous year.
The WA tourism industry added $12.9 billion to the State's economy for the 2017—18 period, and makes up 8.2 per cent of the State's total employment. This is higher than other industry sectors such as mining (7 per cent); professional, scientific and technical services (6.9 per cent); and manufacturing (5.9 per cent). More than a quarter (27.7%) of people directly employed by tourism in WA are in the cafes, restaurants, and takeaway food services sector, with a further 13.7% in the accommodation sector.
"Generating jobs is a key focus for the State Government and it's fantastic news that the WA tourism industry created a record number of employment opportunities during 2017-18." says WA Tourism Minister Mr Paul Papalia.
