Options to continue your apprenticeship or traineeship

The impact of COVID-19 may make it difficult for your employer to maintain your training contract. We are taking a flexible approach to help businesses maintain your employment as an apprentice or trainee where possible, and can offer a range of options as alternatives to terminating your training contract.

Apprentices with an employer.

Extend the duration of the training contract
Extending your training contract provides more time for you to complete the training requirements of your apprenticeship or traineeship, to make sure you can continue developing your skills.

Suspend the training contract
Suspension of a training contract is like taking a break from your apprenticeship or traineeship. Your employer and yourself need to agree on a period of time — for example; three months — then your training contract can resume after that period so that you can continue when conditions improve.

Vary the training contract from full time to part time
Changing your training contract from full time to part time may mean that you can continue to be employed during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Assign/transfer your training contract to a new employer
If an opportunity comes up to continue your apprenticeship or traineeship with a different employer, you will be able to stay in paid employment.

For further information about these options, please call the Apprenticeship Office Helpline on 13 19 54.

Out of contract register for apprentices and trainees

To assist apprentices and trainees who have recently fallen out of their training contract, a free Out of Contract Register is now available which provides a list of  out of contract apprentices and trainees in Western Australia. The register does not include your personal information — just the details of what kind of apprenticeship or traineeship you were doing, what stage you were in (eg; second year), and your location (eg; Perth metropolitan or regional area).

The register is also provided to WA Jobs and Skills Centres, Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) providers and group training organisations who work with employers and can help to connect them with apprentices and trainees looking for employment.

The register will continue to be updated as we confirm the agreement of all parties for their details to be displayed.

You can take a look at the Out of Contract Register here

How do I get on to the register?
When Apprenticeship Office receives notification that your training contract is being terminated, they will contact you to ask if you would like to be added to the Out of Contract Register. You can say no, if you do not want to be added. You can call the Apprenticeship Office Hotline on 13 19 54 if you have any queries about this.

How do employers contact me?
When an employer finds an apprentice or trainee on the register that matches their needs, they contact Apprenticeship Office to ask for your contact details (these are only provided if you have given your permission to do so).

What do I do when an employer contacts me?
When an employer contacts you, it means they are interested in talking about an opportunity to continue your apprenticeship or traineeship. They may ask questions about your training, and your work experience.

Be open to talking about yourself and answering questions — if the employer thinks you are a good match for their needs, they may ask you to come in for a meeting or attend an interview. Good luck!
