Introduction to Commercial Cookery Skill Set

This short course is a great recipe for future success in commercial cookery.

How would you like to be part of a team preparing delicious food in one of WA's restaurants, cafes, bars, resorts or hotels? This short course skill set covers all the 'must know' skills that employers are looking for, so you'll be job ready!

With this short course skill set, you'll learn about the safe use of commercial kitchen equipment; how to clean food preparation areas, storage areas, and equipment efficiently; minimising negative environmental impacts; preventing food contamination including how to identify and control food hazards; and gain general kitchen and food preparation skills.

This skill set consists of units from nationally recognised and accredited qualifications. Successful completion can provide credit, should you pursue further study in a related qualification.

In the Introduction to Commercial Cookery skill set you will learn how to use a range of food preparation equipment and about food safety. Gain real hands on industry experience with work experience in a real commercial kitchen.

Study in specialised facilities

Learn in the real-life setting of our award-winning Bentley Pines Training Restaurant which provides a live, interactive training environment at SM TAFE’s Bentley campus. Students can gain hands-on experience serving and preparing food for members of the public, as well as showcasing their skills planning a menu and advertising special events to the community.

If you have a passion for food and love the idea of working in a fun and fast-paced professional kitchen, creating beautiful and delicious dishes, the Future Chef Job Ready Program offers you training combined with work placement in a commercial kitchen, plus the opportunity to connect with apprenticeship opportunities and get cooking on your future chef career! Skilled chefs are in high demand here in Western Australia, and all over the world — you’ll have a smörgåsbord of job opportunities to choose from, for years to come. 

Everyone is welcome to register for this program. This course is delivered via a face to face classroom method at one of our training sites located in Joondalup and Cannington and there is a mandatory 4 day work placement component in order to successfully complete the Job Ready Program.
