Through this training, as an apprenticeship, you'll be trades qualified to work as a motor mechanic for light vehicles including sedans and SUVs. You'll learn how to do diagnostic testing and repair braking systems, transmissions, suspension, cooling systems, and engines, diagnose and repair ignition, charging and starter systems, and to follow workplace safety and health procedures for a workshop environment. 

A range of elective units are also available, so that you can choose to specialise in areas such as drive assemblies and other engine systems including battery powered vehicles.

The Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology is an apprenticeship you must be employed in a training contract by an appropriate organisation to study.

The Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology will see you qualified as a Light Vehicle Automotive Service and Repair Technician working on the mechanical parts of motor vehicles, including the engine, transmission and suspension systems in the automotive retail, service and repair industry.

Undertaken as part of an apprenticeship, you will gain skills and knowledge to perform a broad range of tasks on a variety of light vehicles including diagnosis and repair, braking systems, transmissions, servicing, suspension, and workplace safety and health.

This qualification develops existing workers and prepares new employees for work in the light vehicle servicing and repair industry.

Training is delivered in modern workshop facilities with industry standard tools and equipment, on actual vehicles.

Learn in specialised facilities

South Metropolitan TAFE's Carlisle Campus is WA's major centre for automotive and panel beating studies. Automotive apprentices and pre-apprentices enjoy state of the art facilities, including new vehicles, specialised repair and diagnostic equipment, fully equipped spray painting ovens, specialised workrooms and workshops. This excellent training program is highly competitive.

Kwinana campus offers specialist training in automotive air conditioning with purpose-built air-conditioning rigs, providing students with a high quality of learning and practical skills. It also boasts a large modern, indoor workshop where students undertake all their learning and training.

When you complete this course you will be ready for a career in the automotive industry. You will have skills and knowledge in light automotive servicing technologies, including engines, suspension and steering systems.  You will learn how to carry out diagnostic procedures and undertake appropriate repairs as well as identifying and applying safe work practices in the light automotive industry.  You will need to be employed and registered as an apprentice/trainee before you can undertake this course. This course may also be available through Recognition of Prior Learning to eligible applicants. This qualification reflects the role of individuals who perform a broad range of tasks on a variety of light vehicles in the automotive retail, service and repair industry.

This qualification is delivered as part of apprenticeship contract and is delivered by institutional off-the-job and on-the-job training. Successful completion of the qualification and apprenticeship contract allows the student to apply for a trade certificate as an Automotive Technician (Light). The qualification provides the skills and knowledge necessary to service, diagnose and repair light vehicle mechanical and electrical systems. To future-skill the apprentice, elective units covering Battery and Hybrid Electric vehicle Depower and Repower, and automotive air conditioning are also offered.

Students will learn how to service, repair, and diagnose faults in motor vehicles. Students will learn how to diagnose service and repair faults in light vehicle engines, transmissions, suspensions, steering, brakes and electrical systems and components.
